Rediscovering 1980s Art and Design in Our Whimsy Room

Who is an 80s baby? If you grew up in or have an affinity for the 1980s, you know it was an iconic decade filled with bold colors, eclectic designs, and a sense of fun that has made a significant comeback. Our latest room design is a vibrant homage to this unforgettable era, encapsulating the essence of 80s art and design in a space that is both nostalgic and contemporary. 

High Ceilings and Architectural Flair

In the 1980s, the rise of McMansions in the U.S.A. brought with them the trend of high ceilings, though not quite reaching the grandeur of the 1800s and early 1900s as discussed in our Belle Room. Our room reflects this architectural style with its lofty ceilings, providing a sense of spaciousness and openness. This design choice creates a perfect canvas for the bold artistic expressions that define the 80s.

The Perfect Fusion of Colors and Styles

To capture the true spirit of the 1980s, we knew the room needed more than just high ceilings—it needed WOW art. With the help of @lollyndona and her signature cat, we achieved just that. The color palette is a delightful mix of turquoise, a color that was incredibly popular during the 80s, and the classic black and white combination reminiscent of the 50s. This vibrant blend is punctuated by a variety of squiggles and other shapes inspired by 60s pop art, culminating in a perfect 80s experience. 

The Memphis Style: Bold and Rebellious

A significant influence in our room's design is the Memphis style, created by Italian designers from Milan. Despite its name, it has no connection to Memphis, Tennessee. This style emerged as a rebellion against the minimalist and functional designs that preceded it, embracing a more playful and unconventional aesthetic. The Memphis style is characterized by its use of bright colors, abstract shapes, and a sense of whimsy that some might liken to elementary doodles.
